WCSB Show 2004.11.24

Wednesday, November 24th, 2004

Today’s playlist has been posted.

I think it was a pretty good show. Lots of Pixies from the live disc I got at the show in Akron. A few more people were streaming the show this morning. We now have the ability to tell which country the person is listening from. Today was all US except for one Canada.

I forgot to play the School House Rock song I had for Thanksgiving. I forgot about the Dead Milkmen Thanksgiving song until _ played it on Monday.

Pixies in Akron

Monday, November 22nd, 2004

Went to see The Pixies last night in Akron.
They were great. I never got to seem them before the break up. I’ve seen Frank Black solo, David Lovering play with Cracker, and Kim Deal at the Euclid Tavern hanging out for a GBV show.
The show was at Rhodes arena. It’s the University of Akron’s basketball gym. I saw Nirvana there on Halloween some time ago.
The Datsuns opened up. They have that Dazed & Confused movie soundtrack essence to them. I didn’t care for them, but the crowd was nice enough not to boo.
You should go see them if they are anywhere near you. I bought the disclive CD of the show and will probably play a lot of it on Wednesday’s show.
Here’s the set list.
Head On
U-Mass
Monkey
Cactus
Caribou
No. 13 Baby
Broken Face
Isla de Encanta
Something Against You
Hey
Mr. Grieves
I Bleed
Velouria
Dead
Gouge Away
Tame
Debaser
Wave of Mutilation
In Heaven
Here Comes Your Man
Ed Is Dead
Where Is My Mind
Vamos
Bone Machine
Gigantic

Bob Mould At The Grog Shop 2004.11.18

Friday, November 19th, 2004

Bob Mould has mellowed out. Not in the music he plays, but in his stage rapport with the crowd. Last night at the Grog Shop he played songs from Husker Du, Sugar, solo stuff, and Blowoff.
Breaking a string a few songs into the set on the 12 string acoustic he was using Bob chatted with the members of the crowd about politics and life in general. He smiled and joked with the crowd at different points in the hour-long set.
Memorable songs performed included Celebrated Summer, If I can’t Change Your Mind, Shine A Little Light, and Makes No Sense At All.
Bob has multiple albums planned for release in the new year including more solo work and another Loud Bomb album.

WCSB Show 2004.11.17

Wednesday, November 17th, 2004

Today’s playlist has been entered.

I thought it went pretty good. It flowed well and the country set in the middle really kept things fresh for me. Thanks for the callers with requests and the guy who started out talking about Wal-Mart, but went on about “why don’t we bomb Russia and China? We bombed Iraq. Why not Russia and China?” You gotta love late night/early morning radio.

Maybe next week I’ll do a jazz set in the show.

What did you think?

The MP3 stream will be HERE when I have it encoded and uploaded to the server.

Background tracks during my blabbing were Sam The Butcher, Lester Bowie, and an Arabic cassette that I can’t tell you anything else about except it had a brown cover with lettering I can’t read.

Food show and the week ahead

Monday, November 15th, 2004

We went to the Food TV “Great Big Food Show” yesterday. It was crowded. I’m not a big fan of crowds. They make me uneasy. I used to love them, but I think the over-sold Gorillaz show in Toronto put me off of being in them or around them.

Anyway, we saw Alton Brown’s show. He did a thing about making jerky using furnace filters and a box fan. Interesting, but I don’t think I trust the stuff the filters are made of.

It’s going to be a busy week. Had school tonight. I got an A on my last Conflict & Communication exam. I have a hair cut tomorrow. Wednesday is my radio show and class that evening. Thursday we’re going to see Bob Mould. Friday evening I’m going to be at the open house at WCSB. Saturday we’re going to see Ted Leo / Pharmacists. Sunday I may go to the station for the 2nd day of open house, and that night we’re going to see The Pixies! Wooh!

I’m really looking forward to the Pixies show. I’ll probably play a lot of Pixies this Wednesday.

Happy week to you all!

P.S. You should listen to Boogiepop Does Not Smile on Monday mornings 9 - 11 A.M. EST.

Week in review

Saturday, November 13th, 2004

I’ve been on-call this week at work. That means my phone goes off at all times of the day and night. Recently it hasn’t been real big problems when it happens. That’s the problem. Being able to configure a system to page you when there actually is a problem and not to worry about when it’s something minor is a pain.

We’ve come a LONG way since I first got involved in the on-call rotation. It used to be a constant barrage of vibrating or ringing pagers. I had no real power at the time in being able to configure the system to decide when or when not to page. I slowly fixed problems in the system itself that caused nuisance pages.

The guy that was “in charge” has now rolled off onto another project. Problems have dramatically reduced. Don’t get me wrong he got stuff done, but the aftermath was always hell to clean up. Just 2 more days and I’ll be free of the buzzing phone on my belt (for 3 weeks).

I answered the phone for a while at the station this week during Radiothon. I did it during the Russian program, 669 Lite, and “This is Metal”. 669 is a talk program. Sweet-ass Sassafras discusses all kinds of goofy things and has become a sort of cult hero. People were calling from MN and IL to donate to his show. The must listen on the web feed.
Hopefully we’ll hit our goal. I’ll find out Wednesday when I go in for my show.

We’re going to the Food TV expo here in town tomorrow. We have tickets for Alton Brown’s demonstrations. That should be fun.

Radiothon

Monday, November 8th, 2004

This week is Radiothon at WCSB. Please give if you can.
There are plenty of premiums to choose from.

Don’t forget to listen in Wednesday moring 4 - 7 AM EST (-5 GMT)!

End of the Century

Sunday, November 7th, 2004

Went to see End of the Century, The Story of The Ramones. It was playing at the CIA Cinematheque. The crowd was mixed with teenagers, college students, and people over thirty (yeah, I’m in that category now).

I knew The Ramones did not get along, but I didn’t know that they REALLY didn’t get along. Clashing personalities, stolen girlfriends, and seeing others benefit from your work (while you don’t receive what you believe you deserve) all contributed to the in-fighting.

This documentary does a good job of showing you what it was like in Queens/NYC in the ’70s, and how The Ramones came together to be American icons. It also shows the viewer the inside drama and frailties of the members.

Next up. Gabba Gabba Hey! - the musical.

WCSB Playlist

Thursday, November 4th, 2004

I have been working on my WCSB playlist page. It’s pretty much complete, but I do want to add some more features like searching for artist or song across all dates.
