Week in review

Saturday, November 13th, 2004

I’ve been on-call this week at work. That means my phone goes off at all times of the day and night. Recently it hasn’t been real big problems when it happens. That’s the problem. Being able to configure a system to page you when there actually is a problem and not to worry about when it’s something minor is a pain.

We’ve come a LONG way since I first got involved in the on-call rotation. It used to be a constant barrage of vibrating or ringing pagers. I had no real power at the time in being able to configure the system to decide when or when not to page. I slowly fixed problems in the system itself that caused nuisance pages.

The guy that was “in charge” has now rolled off onto another project. Problems have dramatically reduced. Don’t get me wrong he got stuff done, but the aftermath was always hell to clean up. Just 2 more days and I’ll be free of the buzzing phone on my belt (for 3 weeks).

I answered the phone for a while at the station this week during Radiothon. I did it during the Russian program, 669 Lite, and “This is Metal”. 669 is a talk program. Sweet-ass Sassafras discusses all kinds of goofy things and has become a sort of cult hero. People were calling from MN and IL to donate to his show. The must listen on the web feed.
Hopefully we’ll hit our goal. I’ll find out Wednesday when I go in for my show.

We’re going to the Food TV expo here in town tomorrow. We have tickets for Alton Brown’s demonstrations. That should be fun.
