Show Day/Time Changing

Friday, January 14th, 2005

I just got email notifiction from the new Program Director at WCSB that I get to take over the Monday 7 to 9 a.m. spot.
Assholier Than Thou is ending.
My first show in the new time slot is January 31st. See you all then!

P.S.
I’m also taking over the web site development. No timetable set yet for a change, but it is supposed to happen very soon.

Weekend recap

Sunday, January 9th, 2005

Went to my side of the family’s Christmas get together. This was the only time we could get everyone together since we’re spread across the state. It was nice seeing everyone.
I got a Pittsburgh Penguins vest. It’s nice, but I’m sure the weather won’t allow me to use it until atleast March (stupid Smarch).
We tried going to the Machine Go Boom/Kiddo show last night at The Beachland Ballroom, but it was sold out. Good for them. It’s good to see the local bands getting support like that (even if the show cost you .99 cents).
So we went over to the new records store by the Beachland called Music Saves. A nice selection of indie rock with a little vinyl thrown in. We bought a Kiddo CD.

To help fund my music addiction I’m selling a bunch of my old computer textbooks and reference books. Look at them here.

Welcome to the new year!

Saturday, January 1st, 2005

A new year is upon us. Make it a good one.

I plan on learning the guitar, finishing my education, and playing great rock ‘n roll this year.

How about you?

WCSB Playlist 2004.12.22

Thursday, December 23rd, 2004

Forgot to post yesterday that the playlist has been updated. It was fun to do a Christmas show.
The morning started out as a pain. The guy that used to have the time slot that I have now was on the air with the guy that is on before me. They do a talk type show with some music mixed in. It’s not my cup of tea, but hey it’s college radio.
So I pull into the parking garage, grab my stuff and start walking to the building the station is in. I dial the station number on my mobile so someone can come down and let me into the building. The university locks the entrance when the library is closed. It took over 10 minutes to get through! You’re talkiing to a bunch of drunks about science fiction. Pick up the friggin’ phone! It then takes one of them another 5 or so minutes to come down and let me in the building. It’s Cleveland! In Winter! It’s Cold outside!
I had planned on having time to go through the station’s Christmas music for extra stuff, but I had very little time. The main air studio was a wreck. There was crap everywhere. They didn’t want to give up control of the board for some reason.
So I finally get one of my discs in a player and cue up the station ID and disclaimer a minute before start time. I get Mogwai going and go searching for extra Christmas music. They’ve moved the Christmas music out of main air! It was just there last week! It’s Christmas, where’s the Christmas CD’s?
Anyway, it was a good show even without the extra stuff. Thanks to _ for the hook-up of PAS/CAL and Asobi Seksu. You should check out his show on Monday mornings at 9 AM EST.
I found the Christmas CD’s as I was leaving. They’re out in the hallway, up high by the exit (note to self).
Next week I’m going to try and put together some of the better stuff I heard this year. The station has no index of what they have in the library. It won’t be easy to find all the good stuff. (That might be a good project. Create a database and interface for cataloging what’s in there.)
I have an idea of some of the things I want to play. Anyone have anything they think was good from this year?

Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays to you all!

Preparing for the week ahead

Sunday, December 19th, 2004

I’ve had a couple of days of vacation this last week. It was nice to just hang out and not do much.
I caught up on Tivo. It had quite a few VH1 Classic “The Alternative” to watch. They have some good stuff on the show.
I finished the semester on Wednesday with a final exam. I’m waiting for the grade to be posted for it. I had an A going into the final, so I’m hoping I’ll have 2 A’s this semester.
I’ve also been preparing for this week’s show. I have a ton of Christmas music. I didn’t know so much existed that would fit in with what I usually play. I’m giving away tickets to Neko Case at The Beachland Ballroom during this week’s show. Her show is on January 15. You need to be atleast 18 and not have won anything from WCSB in the last 30 days.

WCSB Playlist 2004.12.15

Wednesday, December 15th, 2004

The latest playlist has been added. A lot of Christmas stuff played. There will be more next week.
I’ll also be giving away tickets to the Neko Case show at The Beachland Ballroom (Saturday, January 15). Listen and call!

In other news. I had my last final of the semester tonight. A pretty good semester over all.

They hate our policies, not our freedom

Interesting article in The Christian Science Monitor about the latest Pentagon report critical of the administration and it’s approach to terrorism and global security in general.
I’m only a little way into the report, but there are a ton of great zingers.

America’s image problem, many suggest, is linked to perceptions of the United States as arrogant, hypocritical, and self-indulgent. There is agreement too that public diplomacy could be a powerful asset with stronger Presidential leadership, Congressional support, inter-agency coordination, partnership with the private sector, and resources (people, tools, structures, programs, funding). Solutions lie not in short term, manipulative public relations.

The number and depth of these reports indicate widespread concern among influential observers that something must be done about public diplomacy. But so far these concerns have produced no real change. The White House has paid little attention.

The Global War on Terrorism replaced the Cold War as a national security meta narrative. Governments, media, and publics use the terrorism frame for cognitive, evaluative, and communication purposes. For political leaders, it is a way to link disparate events; identify priorities, friends, enemies, victims, and blame; and shape simple coherent messages.

Also scary studies show:
A year and a half after going to war in Iraq, Arab/Muslim anger has intensified. Data from Zogby International in July 2004, for example, show that the U.S. is viewed unfavorably by overwhelming majorities in Egypt (98 percent), Saudi Arabia (94 percent), Morocco (88 percent), and Jordan (78 percent). The war has increased mistrust of America in Europe, weakened support for the war on terrorism, and undermined U.S. credibility worldwide.

Food show and the week ahead

Monday, November 15th, 2004

We went to the Food TV “Great Big Food Show” yesterday. It was crowded. I’m not a big fan of crowds. They make me uneasy. I used to love them, but I think the over-sold Gorillaz show in Toronto put me off of being in them or around them.

Anyway, we saw Alton Brown’s show. He did a thing about making jerky using furnace filters and a box fan. Interesting, but I don’t think I trust the stuff the filters are made of.

It’s going to be a busy week. Had school tonight. I got an A on my last Conflict & Communication exam. I have a hair cut tomorrow. Wednesday is my radio show and class that evening. Thursday we’re going to see Bob Mould. Friday evening I’m going to be at the open house at WCSB. Saturday we’re going to see Ted Leo / Pharmacists. Sunday I may go to the station for the 2nd day of open house, and that night we’re going to see The Pixies! Wooh!

I’m really looking forward to the Pixies show. I’ll probably play a lot of Pixies this Wednesday.

Happy week to you all!

P.S. You should listen to Boogiepop Does Not Smile on Monday mornings 9 - 11 A.M. EST.

Week in review

Saturday, November 13th, 2004

I’ve been on-call this week at work. That means my phone goes off at all times of the day and night. Recently it hasn’t been real big problems when it happens. That’s the problem. Being able to configure a system to page you when there actually is a problem and not to worry about when it’s something minor is a pain.

We’ve come a LONG way since I first got involved in the on-call rotation. It used to be a constant barrage of vibrating or ringing pagers. I had no real power at the time in being able to configure the system to decide when or when not to page. I slowly fixed problems in the system itself that caused nuisance pages.

The guy that was “in charge” has now rolled off onto another project. Problems have dramatically reduced. Don’t get me wrong he got stuff done, but the aftermath was always hell to clean up. Just 2 more days and I’ll be free of the buzzing phone on my belt (for 3 weeks).

I answered the phone for a while at the station this week during Radiothon. I did it during the Russian program, 669 Lite, and “This is Metal”. 669 is a talk program. Sweet-ass Sassafras discusses all kinds of goofy things and has become a sort of cult hero. People were calling from MN and IL to donate to his show. The must listen on the web feed.
Hopefully we’ll hit our goal. I’ll find out Wednesday when I go in for my show.

We’re going to the Food TV expo here in town tomorrow. We have tickets for Alton Brown’s demonstrations. That should be fun.
